Prof. G.C. Berkouwer Dead At Age 92
Written by Rev. H.A. Bergsma
Professor G.C. Berkouwer died on January 25 at the age of 92. One of this century's most influential Reformed theologians, Berkouwer was active in dogmatics, in studies of Barth, and in investigating the relation of Rome to the Reformation. Berkouwer had retired as professor at the Free University of Amsterdam. (From REC News Exchange) Berkouwer was a man committed to Reformed orthodoxy at first, but during the 1950's departed from the classic Reformed viewpoint on several key issues and adopted a more liberal stand (i.e. defending Dr. H. Kuitert's book, The Catholic Doubted Christian Faith). Nevertheless, Berkouwer is well respected for his prolific writings, especially for his 18-volume Studies in Dogmatics, which have also appeared in English.
