Lord's Day 15
Question 37: What dost thou understand by the words, "He suffered"?
Question 38: Why did he suffer "under Pontius Pilate, as judge"?
Question 39: Is there anything more in his being "crucified", than if he had died some other death?
A.
That he, all the time that he lived on earth,
but especially at the end of his life,
sustained in body and soul,
the wrath of God
against the sins of all mankind: (a)
that so by his passion,
as the only propitiatory sacrifice, (b)
he might redeem our body and soul from everlasting damnation, (c)
and obtain for us the favour of God,
righteousness and eternal life. (d)

Isa.53:4 Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet
we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.
1 Pet.2:24 Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree,
that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose
stripes ye were healed.
1 Pet.3:18 For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for
the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the
flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:
1 Tim.2:6 Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due
time.

Isa.53:10 Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put him to
his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the LORD
shall prosper in his hand.
Isa.53:12 Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he
shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his
soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he
bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.
Eph.5:2 And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given
himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling
savour.
1 Cor.5:7 Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new
lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us:
1 John 2:2 And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours
only, but also for the sins of the whole world.
1 John 4:10 Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved
us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
Rom.3:25 Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in
his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that
are past, through the forbearance of God;
Heb.9:28 So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto
them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin
unto salvation.
Heb.10:14 For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are
sanctified.

Gal.3:13 Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made
a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:
Col.1:13 Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath
translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son:
Heb.9:12 Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own
blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal
redemption for us.
1 Pet.1:18 Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with
corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation
received by tradition from your fathers;
1 Pet.1:19 But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without
blemish and without spot:

Rom.3:25 Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in
his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that
are past, through the forbearance of God;
2 Cor.5:21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin;
that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.
John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten
Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have
everlasting life.
John 6:51 I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any
man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I
will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.
Heb.9:15 And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament,
that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that
were under the first testament, they which are called might receive
the promise of eternal inheritance.
Heb.10:19 Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the
holiest by the blood of Jesus,
|
A.
That he,
being innocent, and yet condemned by a temporal judge, (a)
might thereby free us
from the severe judgement of God
to which we were exposed. (b)

John 18:38 Pilate saith unto him, What is truth? And when he had said
this, he went out again unto the Jews, and saith unto them, I find in
him no fault at all.
Matt.27:24 When Pilate saw that he could prevail nothing, but that
rather a tumult was made, he took water, and washed his hands before
the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person:
see ye to it.
Acts 4:27 For of a truth against thy holy child Jesus, whom thou hast
anointed, both Herod, and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles, and the
people of Israel, were gathered together,
Acts 4:28 For to do whatsoever thy hand and thy counsel determined
before to be done.
Luke 23:14 Said unto them, Ye have brought this man unto me, as one
that perverteth the people: and, behold, I, having examined him before
you, have found no fault in this man touching those things whereof ye
accuse him:
Luke 23:15 No, nor yet Herod: for I sent you to him; and, lo, nothing
worthy of death is done unto him.
John 19:4 Pilate therefore went forth again, and saith unto them,
Behold, I bring him forth to you, that ye may know that I find no
fault in him.

Ps. 69:4 They that hate me without a cause are more than the hairs of
are mighty: then I restored that which I took not away.
Isa.53:4 Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet
we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.
Isa.53:5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for
our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with
his stripes we are healed.
2 Cor.5:21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin;
that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.
Gal.3:13 Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made
a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on
|
A.
Yes there is;
for thereby I am assured,
that he took on him
the curse
which lay upon me; (a)
for the death of the cross was accursed of God. (b)

Gal.3:13 Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made
a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on

Deut.21:23 His body shall not remain all night upon the tree, but thou
shalt in any wise bury him that day; (for he that is hanged is
accursed of God;) that thy land be not defiled, which the LORD thy God
giveth thee for an inheritance.
